Q. I have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes and feel concerned & depressed because I'm the first
person in my large family who has had any type of diabetes. I do go to the doctor regularly and am working on losing weight. Any advice?
A. Don't beat yourself up... I hear from a lot of people that feel this exact same way. My sister was
actually recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes and she was very concerned as well. She is working very hard on eating healthier,
exercising, and losing weight.
Its great that your pre-diabetes was caught early. What's even better is that those with
pre-diabetes can actually reverse their diagnosis with lifestyle changes including eating right, exercising regularly, and losing weight!
Research shows that a weight reduction of 5-10% of total body weight
can be very helpful in lowering blood sugar. Keep working on weight loss!
The best way to lose weight is to lower your caloric intake AND increase physical activity. If you haven't exercised in a while be sure to take it slow
(it was hard for my sister in the beginning).
Walking, swimming, using an
elliptical machine, or any aerobic activity that you enjoy are great options. Your goal should be to increase one minute every day
until you reach 45-60 minutes.
Summary
Keep in mind how great you will look and feel after losing weight... the reward for your efforts!
